PLAY THE ST ANDREWS OLD COURSE
A Comprehensive Guide on How to Secure a Tee Time
.avif)
Considered hallowed ground, The Old Course at St Andrews is where the game of golf began over 600 years ago. Countless memories have been made here. It’s many a golfer’s dream to tee off on the 1st in the shadow of the R&A, to walk over the Swilcan Bridge, and to putt out on 18 to a round of applause from bystanders. The first order of business, however, is securing a tee time. This page serves to demystify the various ways of securing a tee time. We hope it’s helpful!
There are 4 ways of securing an Old Course tee time.
From a practical perspective, they can essentially be categorized into two distinct routes. You can either take your chances via a series of three different lotteries in hopes of securing a tee time or instead pay a premium to guarantee your tee time.
You Have Two Options
To Obtain an Old Course Tee Time:
1 The St Andrews Lotteries
The Annual Lottery
(Swilican Package)
The 48 Hour Lottery
(Old Course Ballot)
The Last Minute Lottery
(Singles Daily Draw)
Most golfers play the Old Course by hoping to be successful in 1 of the 3 lotteries that St Andrews makes available at different times of the year. The odds of success via each lottery vary and are thoroughly dissected here. Over the past few decades, Pioneer Golf clients have played thousands upon thousands of rounds on the Old Course via one of these three lotteries.
OR
2 Purchase a Guaranteed Tee Time
About 15% of golfers play the Old Course by purchasing what are referred to as “guaranteed tee times”. These are only available for purchase from golf tour operators that are designated as “Authorised Providers”. Pioneer Golf has been an “Authorised Provider” since the inception of this program and receives an allotment of guaranteed tee times each year.
How to Choose an Option?
The method you choose to play the Old Course will depend on a few factors. Amongst these are your budget, how far in advance you are planning the trip, and your appetite to take on some risk:

Cost
Most golfers don’t want to pay the hefty premium for a guaranteed tee time ($2,000+ per golfer) so instead elect to hopefully secure a tee time through the lotteries especially given that the odds of success are decent. Others don’t mind paying the hefty premium to eliminate any risk of not playing The Old.

Availability
Guaranteed tee times sell out 1.5 to 2 years in advance. Going the guaranteed tee time route may mean putting off your trip for a bit longer to ensure availability. Partaking in 2 of the 3 lotteries is almost always possible. Partaking in all 3 lotteries requires having your ducks in a row before September of the year prior to play.

Your Priorities
The Old Course at St Andrews is the most sought-after round in Scotland, but many golfers return saying Kingsbarns, Carnoustie, Turnberry, Muirfield, Royal Dornoch, or Dumbarnie was their favorite. While the Old Course is historic and iconic, it’s not always the most loved. For some, walking it on a Sunday when it becomes a public park, joining a guided tour, or simply enjoying the magical town of St Andrews is just as rewarding. How important the Old Course is really depends on you!

The 4 Ways of Securing an Old Course Tee Time in Detail:

You may have heard that the only way to get on is through a lottery system or perhaps you’ve heard of ‘guaranteed tee times’. There are, in fact, four ways to get on the Old Course. Some are relatively inexpensive while one way is extremely expensive. Some ways are hassle-free while others involve plenty of moving parts. Some are available while you are on your trip and others require planning one to two years in advance.
It’s important for a group leader to understand all four methods of securing an Old Course tee time since that decision is often made on behalf of an entire group. It’s equally important for anyone joining a trip to understand what approach is being taken to hopefully play the Old Course as it’s often a crucial component of a trip.
The objective of this page is to clearly present the various ways of getting onto the Old so that you can make an informed decision on how to approach this tee time. We want everyone in your group to understand the pros and cons of each way and the odds of success. Our Golf Travel Advisers are happy to answer any questions.
The intention of this page is to be as comprehensive as possible in order for you to be able to make a well-informed decision. We tried to create the most comprehensive resource on the internet on how to play the St Andrews Old Course so we hope you’ll find it helpful. You’ll find every detail imaginable about the various ways of getting a tee time on the Old Course on this page.

Official Name: Swilcan Package
Other names: Advance Application or Advance Old Course Tee Time
Although the official name is the “Swilcan Package”, Pioneer Golf prefers to call this lottery the “Annual Lottery” as it is more descriptive (it only occurs once a year) and helps differentiate it from the other lotteries. A golfer must submit an application to St Andrews petitioning for a tee time. The application can be for up to 4 golfers so multiple separate applications would be submitted for larger groups. Tour operators cannot submit the application on your behalf. A random drawing/lottery is conducted by St Andrews to determine who is successful.
Applications must be submitted by a designated date in September of the year prior to play with results announced in late-October. For example, applications for play in 2027 must be submitted by September 2026 and results are announced in October 2026.
This is a two-course package so you are required to play and pay for another of the St Andrews courses (Castle, New, or Jubilee) if you receive an Old Course tee time. You will also be required to purchase a few other items (food & beverage credit, merchandise credit, and range balls).
Roughly $575 in 2026 (assuming a GBP/USD exchange rate of 1.38).
Note the package will also include the cost of a second St Andrews course, a food & beverage credit of roughly $90, merchandise credit of roughly $35, and the cost of range balls. The entire package is roughly $950 - $1,000.
In the five years leading up to the pandemic about 34% of our clients were successful (April had by far the highest odds). Post-pandemic odds plummeted as demand skyrocketed. For play in 2025, success rates were on average 17.5%. Two outliers were April where the odds were about 31% and June where the odds were less than 10%. No tee times are made available through this process for the month of September. The annual lottery is available for the month of October, but our sample size is small so the percentages below are not statistically significant.

Once results are announced, many other courses are sold out. Book a trip well before September to secure other courses. If successful, we are almost always able to rework an itinerary to slot in the Old.
Official name: Old Course Ballot
Other names: Ballot or Daily Ballot or Daily Lottery
Roughly 50% of all tee times are allocated to the “48 Hour Lottery” which is officially called the “Old Course Ballot”. In the past, this lottery was called the “Daily Ballot”. To avoid confusion, we try not to use the phrase “Daily Ballot” any longer to describe this lottery as there are now two lotteries that occur on a daily basis. We refer to this lottery as the “48 Hour Lottery” since it occurs two days before play or simply as the “Ballot”. This is how the vast majority of all visiting golfers play the Old Course. This is a random drawing held 48 hours before the day of play. Pioneer Golf will enter your group into the drawing for as many days as possible and manage the entire process for you including rearranging other tee times and transportation to accommodate a successful entry. Certain days of the week (Thursdays and Saturdays) offer more tee times through the Ballot so we are mindful to arrange the rest of the itinerary in a manner that takes this into account when possible.
Your entry is made by Pioneer Golf two days before play and results are released that same day. For example, if you’re in St Andrews for six days, Pioneer Golf will enter your group into the Ballot six times provided the course is open each day. The course is closed on Sundays and becomes a public park.
A group must have at least two golfers to enter the Ballot. Up to four golfers are allowed on one entry. Multiple separate entries would be made for groups larger than four with play on different days a possibility.
Roughly $475 in 2026 (assuming a GBP/USD exchange rate of 1.38).
The odds of success on any given day depend very much on the month of travel, the day of the week, and the day’s weather! Since we enter many groups into this lottery multiple times, the odds in the below chart are the odds of success presuming entries have been made for six different days. Do not expect to play the Old Course through the Ballot if you don’t enter multiple times. Pre-pandemic odds were much higher than in 2023, 2024, and 2025. We attribute the lower odds to the post-Covid surge in travel and the growing popularity of golf.

Official name: Singles Daily Draw
Replaced the Standby Line (Single Queue) beginning in March 2024
On March 7, 2024, St Andrews announced the introduction of the “Singles Daily Draw”. We like to call it the “Last Minute Lottery” since it occurs the evening before play. This is yet another lottery for Old Course tee times and replaces the standby line/singles queue which had been around for decades. Golfers can enter the Singles Daily Draw as individuals by completing an online form on iPads that are located inside the Old Pavilion (next to the first tee of the Old Course) or the Links Clubhouse. The iPad will take your photo so be sure to look your best! This lottery caters to single golfers as you enter individually, however we’ve had reports from clients that pairings with others in their group who were also successful have occasionally been made by the staff at the Old Pavilion.
Entry must be made in person the day before play between 9am and 5pm at the Old Pavilion or the Links Clubhouse. Results are announced by 5:30pm that same day. If not immediately successful, you may be put on a waitlist and asked to show up the next morning for a possible tee time.
Must be done in person the day before play. Each entry is limited to one person but all in the group can enter separately.
Roughly $475 in 2026 (assuming a GBP/USD exchange rate of 1.38).
You can enter this lottery as many days as you want to increase your odds. We are not able to keep statistics/odds of success rates via this lottery for our clients as not all report back to us; however St Andrews released a statement in 2025 stating that 45% of all Americans who participated in this lottery were successful in getting a tee time (source). St Andrews has designed this process to be DIY and requires the golfer to be in town in order to partake. We’ve had plenty of clients be successful through this process and some who have even played the Old Course twice thanks to the Singles Daily Draw.

Only available through “Authorised Providers”
Only about 15% of rounds on the Old Course are played via “guaranteed tee times”. These tee times generally sell out 1.5 to 2 years in advance and are expensive. The St Andrews Links Trust (the non-profit that manages the seven St Andrews courses) has designated some companies as “Authorised Providers” (spelled with an “s” not a “z”) of guaranteed tee times and allocates tee times to them each year. Pioneer Golf is an “Authorised Provider”. In addition to receiving guaranteed tee times directly from St Andrews, Pioneer Golf also receives times from accommodation providers in St Andrews who themselves receive tee times directly from St Andrews.
Pioneer Golf receives a large allocation of guaranteed tee times each year. In March of the year prior to play, we are told the number of times in our allocation. The following June, we are told the exact day and time of each tee time. However, we begin selling our times long before March of the prior year since we know roughly how many tee times we will receive each year. Once we are allocated our guaranteed tee times, we allocate them to groups who have signed up based on their preference and their date of sign-up. Generally, tee times received match the itinerary of the group who purchased them, but there is always the slight possibility that the trip may have to shift a bit to accommodate the tee time.
Each Old Course tee time comes automatically paired with either a Castle, New, or Jubilee course tee time. Guaranteed Old Course tee times are only sold to groups of four or more. Guaranteed tee times which were sourced from an accommodation provider in St Andrews are sold along with a requirement to stay at that establishment for 4-5 nights (requirements may vary depending on the accommodation provider).
More than $2,000 in 2026 (includes a few extras).
These times generally sell out one to two years in advance. Only a small percentage of all golfers who play the Old Course in any given year will play using a guaranteed tee time due to the high cost or because guaranteed tee times are sold out when they set out to book a trip.

More advice on odds of success...
Keep in mind that groups larger than 4 golfers may be successful on different days or one group may be successful and the other not.
Odds of success are not affected by whether you enter as a twosome or foursome.
Avoid going on days when the course is closed or partially closed, which isn't always easy. We track all course closures in order to avoid arranging your trip when there are significant course closures. Almost every week between April and October has some sort of partial closure. The key is to avoid weeks with significant closures.
Consider staying in St Andrews for your entire trip. The more days you enter the Ballot, the greater the chance of success. A trip with three days in St Andrews and three days in a different area (for perhaps Turnberry, Royal Troon, or Royal Dornoch) is not ideal for your Ballot odds. There are plenty of top-tier courses in the St Andrews area to keep you there for 6 or more days if playing the Old Course via this lottery is a priority.

If successful, what happens to the other course I have scheduled…
1. If you are successful through the Ballot on a day when no other golf is booked, no issues arise!
2. If you are successful through the Ballot and your Old Course tee time conflicts with another pre-scheduled round, we will do our best to move that other round to where it makes most sense. Naturally, other courses may not have tee times available that align with your schedule so please keep in mind that rearranging other courses is subject to availability. Most (not all) of the time we manage to rearrange other rounds (Carnoustie is often an exception). Please understand that the worst case scenario is that a successful Ballot time conflicts with a course that cannot be moved and you are forced to choose between the two (no refund is available at a prepaid and pre-booked course). It is always a good idea to work in a day with no golf into the trip so that an entire day is available to possibly move a pre-scheduled round that may end up conflicting with success on the Ballot.
3. If you are driving yourselves in a rental car or have a full-time coach and driver, a last-minute change to accommodate success on the Ballot typically presents no transportation issues. However, if you have selected Private Group Transfers for your trip, a last minute change in transportation needs will be subject to the driver’s availability. If the driver doesn’t happen to be free to accommodate the change, taxis are readily available and are useful for such last-minute and fortuitous Old Course emergencies! No reimbursement is available for unused transfers due to success on the Ballot since drivers have committed and been paid for transfers at specific times and days.

If Successful, what happens to the other course I have scheduled…
Pioneer Golf provides all clients a detailed itinerary via our iPhone/Android app. On this app, we will provide a “Click to Call” button for all courses on your itinerary so you can easily change a tee time that may conflict with an Old Course tee time obtained at the last minute through the Singles Daily Draw. Note that since you may be deviating from your prearranged golf at the last minute, and possibly without the rest of your group, be sure not to accidentally move a tee time for the entire group if you were the only one who was successful. We will also provide a “Click to Call” button to taxi companies in town should you need additional transportation. Note that availability may prevent you from moving a conflicting round and that no course will refund your green fee should you decide to skip their course in order to play the Old Course. It is always a good idea to work in a day with no golf into the trip so that an entire day is available to possibly move a pre-scheduled round that may end up conflicting with success on the Singles Daily Draw.
