The Australian Golf Club

Perhaps Australia’s “hardest to get on” and most exclusive club, this is Australia’s oldest golf club. Dr. Alister Mackenzie re-designed some holes in 1926 and it was renovated again in 1967 by Sloan Marpeth, and then again by Jack Nicklaus in 1977. Located in a sandy basin, the design is mostly open but lined with many trees and some elevated greens. Sand traps and lakes act as hazards for this “American style” golf course with artificial ponds and numerous bunkers. The club has hosted to the Australian Open numerous times (most recently in 2019) and the Greg Norman Holden Classic. Perhaps the clubs most significant moment was tragedy when the classic clubhouse burned down in early 1980’s, and was replaced by the very spacious and elegant (but modern) substitute. This course is a treat, if you are fortunate enough to get on!
