The St Andrews Old Course is the oldest golf course in the world. Golf can be traced there as early as the 15th century, which has established St Andrews as the “Home of Golf”. In 1457, James II of Scotland banned golf because of its growing popularity and time taken away from archery practice. Then in 1502, King James IV lifted the ban on golf and historians suspect he played golf there in 1504.
Early on the course was comprised of 12 holes, and a round consisted of 22. The holes were played twice in both direction while players skipped two holes. Then in 1764 the course was reduced to 18 holes. In 1832 the greens were enlarged and it created an economical way of maintaining and playing 18 separate holes and fairways.
