There are hundreds of very fine golf courses in the British Isles, with only relatively few well known to North Americans. Scotland and Ireland are small countries, and these courses are not particularly far from each other. England, being larger and more densely populated, has many courses throughout the country.
The majority of golfers spend about a week, spread the time over two different hotels, and play about six courses. However, in several areas it's quite possible to spend an entire week at one hotel. Incidentally, in summer, darkness falls as late as 11:00pm in the northern part of Scotland!
Most visitors would fly into Glasgow or Edinburgh if playing in Scotland or Shannon, Dublin, or Belfast if Ireland, all of which are served by a number of airlines directly from the United States and Canada. In England, Manchester, Birmingham, and London have numerous direct flights from and to the United States. Whatever your flight plans, on arrival, you will not be far from your first base. There is a good selection of deluxe, first class, and inexpensive accommodations, many with a distinctly golfing flavor!
On this web site, you will find a brief description of those courses that are most likely to be played by the visitor. A point to note: you may want to play the Old Course at St Andrews, and it should be stressed that demand to play this course, and a few others, is such that it is never too early to plan your trip!
